Green Urban Manufacturing InitiativeCDTech’s newest project is the Green Urban Manufacturing Initiative (GUMI)! GUMI is different than most “Green” initiatives today which tend to focus on solar, wind and other alternative energy projects.  GUMI strives to work with existing urban manufacturers in four target sectors not usually associated with Green, but that have a great economic impact in the region’s economy and in underserved communities.  By greening these sectors (food processing, apparel, metals and furniture) we can help retain and grow these businesses, by helping them stay competitive in an ever greening marketplace.

How will GUMI green these sectors?   By increase the number of manufacturing firms using green production processes, we can improve their energy efficiency and help them reduce carbon emissions.  We also hope to develop  new green production clusters, by helping identify markets for manufacturing green products.  By looking at energy efficient production processes, recycling, supply chains, packaging, worker safety and other areas, GUMI will help participants upgrade their operations, pursue sustainable business practices, and strengthen the workforce by linking to the growing green economy.  With CDTech’s 15 year history of developing and fostering manufacturing networks in a number of industries — CDTech understands the unique challenges urban manufacturers face.

Funded by the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, GUMI is currently exploring both the challenges and opportunities for urban manufacturers to make this green transformation.  Working together with industry, CDTech is moving forward in creating a successful program.   GUMI is also working collaboratively with many important partners who bring knowledge and experience to the project, including Green for All, USC, Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles , UCLA Labor Occupational and Safety Health, SCOPE L.A. and the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.
